On the 29th October, 1855 Moses McNeil was born from the east side of the Gareloch & was a founder member of a famous Glasgow football team! He was a natural athlete powerful & of stocky build, it was said that was known for his pace & he had stamina too. He won his 1st cup for a half-mile race at the Garelochead Athletic Sports on 1st January, 1876 & it's the oldest trophy that sits in The Rangers Museum. A member of a Rangers side that lifted the Glasgow Merchants Charity Cup in 1879 & the 1st player to represent Scotland against Wales, then capped to play against England defeating them 5-4 at First Hampden Park in 1880.
Locals recall, "The Rangers man'', was always very dapper in his suit & bowler hat, he would travel to Glasgow once a month to collect his pension, from the Club, then return later in the day with a spring in his step & a slur on his speech!
Moses McNeil packed a bag in 1871, left Rosneath, & headed to industrial Glasgow seeking employment. What he actually did was help form a football club that was to become the world's most successful & would affect the lives of millions worldwide for generations to come. He spent the last few years of his life living in Clynder at Craig Cottage.
